We've all heard how busy the subway are both in Beijing and Shanghai. It is not a common transportation tool I would recommend to anyone.
Bearing in mind, if you compare Health and Safety policies with western standard, you will really hope nothing goes wrong in those subway trains and stations. (I have worked on those systems for Shanghai subway in early 90's.)
Again, only my personal opinion, never use the subway in China. Since 1994, I have only tried the subway once in China, and gave up after 2 stops, that was in 2003. I particularly don't like to have close touching with half million people.
Oh please, that's risk of life. Do you use London's tube? Has a great security system ...
China's subways are fast and convinient. Do you prefer cars and limousines? Traffic is also said to be quite dangerous ... no seat belts in taxis, Chinese drivers with Chinese habits ("sneezing") ...
