Using AA miles on internal European flights

Last October I booked two tickets from Bristol England to Naples Italy (each ticket: 25000 miles and about $140 in taxes and fees). Not a great use of miles but unfortunately Easyjet does not fly that route. I used the AA partner Brussels Airlines so we had a stopover in Belgium. The flight I booked departed Bristol at 7:40am and arrived in Naples at 1:20pm. Very convenient times for a journey to Capri. About a week before departure I decided to see if I could check-in online with this airline. Only then did I discover that they had canceled the flight !! When I called Brussels Airline they said that we had been transferred to the evening flight from Bristol (with an 18 hour layover in Brussels). When I complained about not being informed about the change they said it was American Airlines responsibility. When I asked for an airport hotel for the night they said that was not their policy. So I called AA and guess what – they said it was Brussels Airline responsibility ! End result – 10000 Starwoods points wasted on an airport hotel and one night less in Italy. I guess the lesson here is that if you book months in advance you need to check the flight schedule every few weeks. If I had known a month in advance about the change I could have made alternative arrangements.
