Your story is kind of ironic, because I volunterred for a bump today which required an overnight stay, and when I asked for the meal voucher with my hotel voucher (I only negotiated the hotel as part of the "deal"), I was told that I was not due a meal voucher because I was not on a meal flight. Sort of absurd logic if you ask me, because due to the bump I had a 14 hour delay....but I guess if UA doesn't alienate too many VDBs this way, maybe it makes sense to the bottom line.
Anyhow not a huge deal for me as I probably wouldn't have used the meal voucher, and the hotel they put me up in has free breakfast.
