I put them on after the seatbelt sign comes off and stay in them until I get home/to work.. If I have a pair spare, I put them on before passport control and wear my coat over (hand to the stewardess once I'm seating).

I also wear sandals and pack comfy socks, I can never fathom why people wear suits onto planes for overnight flights (pack em good and they won't crease).
