I could not resist getting first hand evidence.
Although our itinerary involves SYD rather than Narita, having spent over an hour on the phone with Aeroplan, I can indeed confirm from first hand that indeed that works.
I can also confirm that in addition to a $55+GST change fare, they gauged me in a fuel surcharge increase in the amount of $150 or so.
So, the exercise was kind of pricey....
