Why do you think Gran Canaria is such a trek? If you're flying to Spain you can only fly to Madrid or barcelona anyway so unless you stay near to those, you would have to get a connecting flight anyway...

If you want nice weather you are pretty much restricted to the Canaries, but Torremolinos near Malaga has some gay life. The weather probably won't be as good as the Canaries though so don't bank on being able to get a tan!
