Depends on your timetable but we are actually spending 2 days in AKL then flying to Queenstown then connecting back to Fiji, as a result we cannot stopover in SYD in anyway.... Kiwi Flyer was kind enough to point out that if you purchase tickets via NZ's domestic site, you can get some really great deals on intra NZ flights. So, whatever works for you will make most sense!

Be wary that the connecting flights sometimes don't work out perfectly and you may have to overnight in NAN if you are going to another island from there.
