I think it depends on the day and time you first arrive, and the number of people ahead of you. If you get to the Embassy at 7:30 AM, can clear security, have your DS-4085 with you and completed, some report wait-times of as little as 15 minutes. When I went it was more like, "sorry, we cannot do that today". It looked like ~ 80 Americans waiting in this small area. I've yet to go back and try again. Also be careful as they are closed every U.S. and Thai major/minor holiday, and the last Friday of each month, hours are 7:30 - 11:00 and 13:00 - 14:00. Just about everything (phones, umbrellas, magazines) is held at security so it might be easier to forego the normal stuff for this excursion. Fast and easy do not come to mind when it comes to the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok.
