Good advice but I would caution against choosing CO for NYC-SFO if it's upgrades that the OP wants. CO is probably the most difficult airline to upgrade, and EWR-SFO is one of the most difficult upgrades in the system. I have trouble finding paid F seats on that route, and I think the average number of upgrades for all flights is something like one or two seats a flight. Even platinum members have little chance of an upgrade there.
