Lots of stuff goes on most everywhere around July 4th. The Pops concert in Boston with its fireworks is well-known but a total mob scene. There's a thread here on how to see it best.

My home town, New Bedford of whaling history fame, has a Summerfest on the closest weekend with two full days of folk music, crafts, food ... if you're in the area and like that sort of thing.
