The only purely complementary upgrades you can get are if you book in Y or B and seats are available. Beyond that, you have to either: a) use 500-mile certificates, which you'll only gradually accrue, or b) cash in your redeemable miles for the upgrades.
not so - I've had a number of op-ups over the years flying PS between JFK and LAX/SFO.
