I'm a firm believer in the "if you want to be up front pay the price" model but an upcoming trip to Lima has me thinking. After buying an X fare ticket, I called and was waitlisted for a 20,000 mile one-way upgrade on the outbound. The upgrade cleared six days out. After the first round of EUAs there are still 5 or 6 empty seats.

Is it possible to cancel the miles upgrade, drop back into coach and get an EUA at the gold, silver or check in window?

I wouldn't do it, again - I wanted the seat and my butt is currently booked there (bird in the hand...), but it would be interesting to know if it could be done.
