The area empties out on weekends because it's still rather new - 5 years ago it was mostly vacant lots. There's a definite intent to have it be much like Arlington's Courthouse area, which offers plenty of nightlife, but I would have to say that right now it is still in the development stage of offering much nightlife.
But, as mentioned, Old Town Alexandria is very nearby and Old Town "extended" is about a 10-minute walk (King Street has many restaurant choices), and the restaurants of Del Ray are about 2 miles away. I would guess that the nearest CVS drugstore is about a 20-minute walk (near King and North Washington). You also have the King Street and Eisenhower Avenue Metro stops to whisk you anywhere you want, there's a bike/jogging trail that runs the length of Eisenhower Avenue, and the Cameron Run Regional Park (city-owned and includes a water park) is about a mile away.
