I've got about 300k points in Starwood, and have been Plat with them for a few years, but just started Hyatt this year after calling and getting a level match + the Clear card for free with them.
Have racked up about 100k points with Hyatt in 2008, but really haven't figured out their award structure yet. But I can see what you're talking about with the Cat5.
I can grab a junior suite at Belgravia / Park Lane for around 14,500 pts, and I'll assume points to points is roughly equal betwixt Hyatt & Starwood.
I see what you mean though - 140sterling vs 550E for the same pt range is a pretty shabby deal.
points to points is not equal.. hyatt = 6.5 (diamond) pts/$.. spg = 3 (plat) pts/$.. so hyatt is about 1/2 of spg.. higher end hotels at hyatt are much cheaper than higher end hotels at spg.. but you can get some awesome deals at spg with cat 1/2 in south east asia..
