How long before a schedule change self-confirms, or does that not matter?

For next spring break, my boyfriend and I decided to go to Tokyo as a change of pace from our usual Europe trip. He's in MHT, I am in DFW. When we booked this we were going through ORD both ways.

With the June schedule change, ORD-NRT changed to a 747, which I refuse to do in coach, and they added a double-connect for us (SEA then either ORD or IAD) on the return.

We are still debating on how to fix this, or if we are going to scrap Tokyo for next year and just do Europe again. How much time do we have to debate before they automatically confirm this, or does that not matter if I call to change/cancel later?

We have the return figured out (we'll both switch to the NRT-IAD), but avoiding ORD to NRT on the outbound means one of these two options:

1) Via IAD, but that means I have to fly to IAD the night before and get a hotel. And possibly argue with the agents to book it as that does not come up as an option on the outbound, at least when I search united.com.

2) Via SFO, but that means the bf has to go MHT-IAD-SFO in the morning with only about an hour connection in SFO. That could be inviting problems.

Plus, all the future schedule reductions are not in the system yet. If we change it now, and then only one of us goes through a schedule change/reduction, we might have another problem.

Hence the thought of canceling it and looking at Europe again, since it is easier for the bf to go east from MHT.
