That was my thought as well- that the protocol engine was more than just firmware. I was hoping that 1.1 -> 1.2 might be firmware, but very willing to believe that a change to 2.0 would require hardware (hence the major version number). Neither AT&T nor Motorola were much help.

Maybe it's time for a new phone Razr Vxx, or something similar...I love the slim form factor...
