So if you decide you don't want your $50 gift card, you can trade it in for... wait for it... a new $50 gift card!!
They sell all the airline gift cards in the grocery markets in CA. United is the only one that does not participate. I suggested this a few years ago on this forum. Progamming for these cards is not at all difficult. This would be a good revenue generator but UA thinks the only way to do that is create more fees.
