Is this really a substantial problem, in your experience? It most certainly has NOT been a problem in my experience whatsoever. I consider the SPG program, on the whole, to be exceedingly fair and rewarding.
[I am aware of some trouble spots like the Resort at Singer Island, for example, that doesn't upgrade Plats based on what I consider a technicality -- the property, moreover, makes essentially no effort to extend consideration to SPG Platinum guests, and I consider that to be well outside the spirit of the SPG program.]
That, and a few other rare exceptions, aside, I maintain that the SPG program is still the best out there. All the more reason for
sc flier's initial post above --- he's disappointed in this new wrinkle that clearly veers off in a direction that's so different than the core SPG program.
I'm all for fair criticisms, and I consider his a very fair concern. But, I must disagree when it's claimed that SPG has "less control" of their hotels than other chains -- if one is referring to award availability here, then I strongly disagree. Have you tried nailing down a last minute Marriott award room in a preferential location at the standard rate lately?
As for the suggestion that some SPG properties are trying to "skirt around giving away award rooms"..... can you give us a number of good examples to support that claim? Is this a legitimate sweeping issue with the SPG program or rare examples involving three or four properties?
