I took my parents, both over 65, and drove them around including the Grand Canyon, they loved it!!
It might matter
when in April (later = warmer) but flying into Phoenix (BA nonstop) and heading off to the "four corners" area might be interesting. See Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, the Grand Canyon - it can make for a great week-10 day excursion. Maybe stop in NYC on the way home for a day or two (or reverse directions, easily done.)
The red rocks country is wonderful in April - warm at lower elevations, cool at higher ones, with wildflowers and blue skies in abundance.
