The system seemed to fail twice: with both the contract employees and the manager at check in. What impressed me further was that she gave me her number and asked me to call her the next time I am at SFO, so she could walk me through.

I was very impressed. Impressed that AA clearly had thought through the possible inconvenience to the frequent flyers and had a mechanism to deal with it—though it is a work in progress. However, I was really impressed that the station manager recognized an issue, was prepared to intervene, took time to talk to a customer and had a solution to make sure that the problem doesn’t happen again. Kudos to AA. Much more than I could have expected.
They need to fix their learning curve fast. I was flying a week ago Monday JFK-BGI on a full J ticket. The carry-on police made me try to fit my Tumi roller which I have used for five years into the sizewise and it missed by maybe one inch. I was sent back to check it. Of course AA lost the bag. For 2.5 days they had no clue where the bag was. On Thursday there was a knock on my hotel door and there was the bag. On Friday I got a call from AA wanting to start the claims process since they hadn't found my bag.

I have a F ticket JFK-LAX upcoming and have seriously been thinking about switching to Virgin America.
