I received a free year of Gold status in the mail due to some program with AA. I was able to take advantage of it right away as I had a convention at the Chicago Hilton. I was upgraded to a 1-bedroom suite, given access to the Exec. Lounge (free breakfast) and coupons for some free bottles of water.

I've been SPG Gold for a few years and go out of my way to stay at SPG but will definitely consider Hilton as the Hilton Gold seems to be a lot better than SPG Gold.
