If your flight is several months away, you can get seats pre-assigned. Otherwise not. I forget the cutoff date. If you have the BA locator and can't get seats assigned, then you are within their cutoff and calling won't help.

However, rather than wait for the airport, you should check-in online 24 hours before your flight. All seats will be open at that time.

I had similar experience with BA. As most seats were unassigned, getting one at the -24hr OLCI was no problem.
