This often works for outstations, but for hubs... not so much. AA often has metal coming in from A, cockpit crew from B, and FA crew from C. Hence the inbound aircraft could get to the gate an hour earlier than the FAs. The arrivals monitor will (accurately) show the inbound as on-time, and the pax will see an airplane sitting at the end of the jetway.
In these cases, the more relevant info is which of the 3 components is on the critical path. eg: "Our inbound crew is delayed coming from LAX"... but then again, savvy pax might check the monitors and notice how crazy-long it is taking that inbound FA crew to get from gate C12 to gate C16.
