One thing to keep in mind: If AA files for bankruptcy, the airline will most likely ask the judge very early on in the process, within days of the initial filing, to continue AAdvantage and other customer programs as is, pretty much the way they are run now.
Some of us had this discussion when United did that very thing with regard to the Mileage Plus program.
I think AAdvantage is hugely profitable, so it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
Others around here are far more knowledgable on this subject than I am, and one thing I've learned from them is that, assuming AA files for Chapter 11, nothing bad is going to happen to AAdvantage for several months after that - if something bad happens at all.
Seems to me that trend toward devaluation of miles in many programs is a better reason to use them up.
