Definitely go to the South Island of New Zealand, it is beautiful. We rode the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth, and then rented a car and drove to Queenstown. The variety of landscape and climate in such a small area is amazing. We purchased intra-NZ airtickets directly from the Air New Zealand website and got cheap fares.
