Some data points -
- In both places there will be a surplus of tourists at all the major spots.
- Car rental prices are much higher in Alaska than they are in Calgary.
- There's a much higher density of tourist schlunk in Banff and Jasper than in Anchorage or Seward.
- Denali is seen by roughly half of all visitors to the park.
- One of FT's finest trip report correspondents, Seat2A, drives one of the park shuttle buses at DNP. You might get lucky and get a ride with him.
- If you have enough time (do you?) you can do a loop - Anchorage to Denali to Fairbanks to Valdez, then ferry across Prince William Sound to Whittier, then down the Kenai or to Seward, then back to ANC. Even if you don't see the mountain, the rest of the scenery will burn holes in your retinas.
- There's a paved path around much of Lake Louise. How's that for a wilderness experience?
I'd say your mileage investment goes farther in Alaska. I'd also suggest you think about some alternative experiences, like a McKinley flightseeing trip, or a fly-in fishing trip on a floatplane out of Lake Hood in Anchorage. Get off the road system in Alaska and there's nothing like it.
