Correction: There are two major U.S. cellular providers that use GSM. Verizon and Sprint do no use GSM.

The OP is going to find vast holes in coverage in inland Alaska no matter what his carrier. Phone cards from a landline phone may prove cheaper and more reliable for outbound calls.
