Yoga Woman Prompts Plane Etiquette Debate

In cell phone footage that has since gone viral, yoga instructor Kate Kay can be seen in the aisle of her flight assuming various yoga poses, surrounded by fellow passengers.

Responding to the resulting online discussion of the appropriateness of this use of public space while on an aircraft, Kay said, “We should all listen to our intuition and allow our health to take precedence over our need for validation through others,” she said.

An aircraft cabin is no place for yoga or any other exercise. There are times when one of these people will come to the galley and consider it acceptable to take up space in our work area, contorting into positions best accomplished at home or at the gym. Crew members wouldn't come to your work place and do this, so why do passengers think that they have the right to stick their butts in ours? We kick them out right away.....if they want to argue I have the flight deck turn on the seat belt sign....sit and buckle up lady.

I have a bad back and need to stretch on flights, but I always go to the back of the plane for these sort of things rather than in the middle of the isle.

If she absolutely had to do yoga, why didn't she move to the mid-cabin area over the wings near an emergency exit and or toilets and/or a galley? There is usually some space there that will not disturb other passengers. Personally, I often go there during a long-haul flight and do some light stretching, standing on my toes, even a little bending and flexing of the legs/knees without disturbing others.

Food 4 Thought: I am a male who is not height/weight proportionate...I am hefty. Would the supportive responses for this woman's behavior be so forthcoming if it was me flailing around in the front of the aisle in yoga pants?

Kay said, “We should all listen to our intuition and allow our health to take precedence over our need for validation through others,” she said. This has to be one of the most creative rationalizations yet to justify incredibly selfish behavior. Maybe they did not allow her to bring her emotional support peacock onboard and yoga was the only way she could cope?
