SAS Devalues Star Alliance Award Chart Overnight
Scandinavian Airlines, or SAS, has devalued its Star Alliance award chart for EuroBonus members, and it seems to have happened overnight, according to this FlyerTalk thread.
The change has affected business and first class awards to all award regions on Star Alliance partners. For example, award flights between Europe and North America in business class have gone up from 110,000 EuroBonus miles to 130,000 miles. Same flights in first class are now listed at 175,000 EuroBonus miles (up from 150,000 miles). The increase in the redemption rates is rather steep.
At this moment, only Star Alliance awards are affected. SAS flights themselves cost the same number of miles as they did before the sudden change.
While award redemption rates have gone up, the Stockholm-based airlines claims that the carrier-imposed fees have dropped on flights booked with EuroBonus points. If you are a member of the EuroBonus program and redeem miles, please let us know whether you’ve noticed a decrease in fees.
It is concerning that the airline implemented this change to the Star Alliance award chart so suddenly. Customers received no heads up, which betrays the trust for the company, which in turn breeds disloyalty. Giving some warning would have been the right move here to prepare both the airline and the frequent flyers for the increase of redemption rates.
Are you a EuroBonus member? What do you think of the startling news?

This is why you should never accumulate points. It’s like Venezuelan currency.
It is also worth noting that Eurobonus points do expire after some time even with activity on the account. Worth noting for more infrequent flyers who amass reasonable amounts of points on the flights they do take.
This is why we should be earning interest on our points balances
They are recently adding worse to bad. I still need to fly with them as they are the (only) cheapest ones to add a lot of luggage.
