Pop-Up Hotel to Have Guests Sleep in Shipping Containers

A pop-up hotel company recently signed a deal to build hotel rooms out of shipping containers for the World Cup in 2018.

During the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, many guests staying in Saransk may end up sleeping in shipping containers. Snoozebox, a London-based company that transforms used shipping containers into pop-up hotels, signed a preliminary deal last week with FIFA World Cup organizers to set up a 2,000-room “Snoozebox Football Village” for the event, according to The Moscow Times.

The remodeled containers, which can be stacked and take less than 48 hours to assemble, will feature rooms with two beds, Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, a safe, climate control, power sockets and an en-suite bathroom, according to Snoozebox’s website. The Daily Mail  reported that hotel staff and maid service will also be available. The Village will include restaurants, stores, a screen simulcasting the World Cup games, and all sorts of entertainment and recreational venues.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based architects at OVA Studio have designed their own hotel composed of recycled shipping containers, which property owners would be able to insert and remove to fit their needs. Fast Company reported that the architects proposed major brands could perhaps sponsor rooms in the Jenga-like accommodation. “It’s a curious branding idea,” the magazine wrote. “A company like Ferrari, for instance, might sponsor a room and outfit it inside and out. These company-sponsored containers might only [be] included in the hotel for a limited time before they’re swapped out for a room designed by another company.”
