New Qatar Jet Suffers Awkward Fail

Qatar Airways’ new Airbus A350 suffered an awkward moment last week after the aircraft’s computer system deemed the 11,000-foot runway at JFK too short and prevented the flight from completing its first takeoff.

According to Yahoo, “Rather than watching the plane soar to 30,000 feet, it taxed, picked up speed — and then came to a startling and screeching halt.” Though no injuries were reported, the flight was delayed by two hours.

KRSW, am I missing something? The very last line of the article above states "the flight was delayed by two hours."

This is an interesting fail-safe built in to the flight management software. But I think the addition of so much software code appears to bring about it's own share of issues and problems. Hard to say which outweighs which.

I've heard various explanations for it, some blaming the pilots, some blaming the aircraft. Either way, I'd actually call it a success. Why? No injuries, flight still departed on-time.

Gotta love teething problems. It's the A350's turn now...787 you can relax now;)
