Mobile Phones May Help Airports Manage Security Lines

A new technology, developed by Danish company BLIP Systems, can predict passenger flow, helping airports manage long queues.

Security lines at airport can be frustrating, as the process can sometimes take hours to get through. Tnooz reports, however, that a solution for this problem may be closer than we think.

A Denmark-based company called BLIP Systems has developed a line measurement technology that helps airports track passenger numbers by counting as passengers’ mobile phones cross their beacons. So far, this technology has been used to generate reports, alerting airport staff of backlogs and letting passengers know how long the wait is going to be on digital monitors.

Their latest development, however, is a forecasting solution, which projects future passenger flow. The new tech, called “Optimiser Module,” predicts passenger demand by combining real-time and historic data with future flight schedules, expected growth, events, holidays and other data points. It can help airports predict the demand even months ahead of time and it can be integrated into existing airport management systems.

According to Christian Bugislaus Carstens, marketing manager at BLIP, studies reveal that every minute of delay can cost the airport an average of €1.00 per passenger.

“Each day or period brings new changes such as flight delays, cancellations, changing passenger numbers, unplanned events, seasonal changes, national holidays. (…) Disruptions impact the operational plan and require both live and long-term operational changes in airport passenger processing areas to prevent queues, frustrated passengers and lost revenue.” Carsten said.

In the U.S., BLIP’s technology is already being used in at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).
