Japan Airlines Proposes Turning Clothes Into Fuel

Japan Airlines is working with recycling firm Japan Environment Planning (Jeplan) and Tokyo’s Green Earth Institute to develop alternative jet fuel made of clothing. The airline hopes that this newly developed fuel could be ready for testing as early as 2020. Jeplan currently works with 12 different Japanese retailers to collect used garments from around 1,000 stores across the country.

“I totally believed that in the future, there would be a car that runs on garbage,” said Jeplan founder Michihiko Iwamoto. “But years went by, and that didn’t happen. So I thought I’d develop it.”
