Honolulu Airport Investigates Mysterious Death of Security Breacher

Non-flyer reported to run through security checkpoint and collapse after reaching aircraft walkway.

Authorities in Hawaii are putting the pieces together in a strange case involving the death of a non-flying individual who ran through a security checkpoint and died after being caught. The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the person died after being detained by local law enforcement officers.

The incident took place on Saturday, Feb. 18, in the early morning hours. The individual, only identified as a male in his 40s, was not a ticketed passenger aboard any aircraft, but ran through the checkpoint exit into the security area. A security guard attempted to stop the individual and was pushed away by the runner. The person was ultimately stopped and detained when he reached a walkway leading to commuter aircraft.

Once detained by law enforcement officers, the individual became unresponsive. Paramedics from the Honolulu Fire Department were called to the scene in an attempt to save the person’s life. However, he could not be resuscitated and was declared dead at the airport.

Authorities for the airport say the individual’s security breach and death did not affect any airport operations for the day. A motive for breaching the security checkpoint or the individual’s goal has not been determined. Detectives for the Honolulu Police Department are still investigating the situation.

In addition to the man’s death, a security guard was hospitalized with head injuries after being pushed by the individual. A cause of death for the individual has not been released. Private security guards, agents with the Transportation Security Administration and Hawaii State Sheriff’s Deputies were involved in the incident.
