Delta Linked to Online Chat Data Breach

Delta Air Lines says they are one of two companies who were part of a data breach through an online application on their website. The airline announced an unknown number of flyers who used the service between September 26 and October 12, 2017 had their payment information exposed online.

Delta Air Lines is warning flyers to be vigilant with their personal information, after some credit card numbers were leaked online. In a statement, the carrier confirmed those who made a purchase on their website between September 26 and October 12, 2017 are most vulnerable to the data breach.

The leak is attributed to an online chat application, run by [24]7.ai. However, the company is warning flyers did not have to use the chat to be affected. Individuals potentially affected are those who completed a purchase at Delta.com using a desktop or laptop computer. Data affected includes names, addresses, credit card numbers (including CVV codes) and expiration dates.

When the airline was notified about the cyber incident, they immediately took steps to understand the extent of the damage. The Atlanta-based company reported the incident to federal law enforcement and are working with forensic teams to determine the extent of the damage.

“During this time certain customer payment information for [24]7.ai clients, including Delta, may have been accessed,” the Delta statement reads. “But no other customer personal information, such as passport, government ID, security or SkyMiles information was impacted.”

As a result of the data breach, Delta has set up a special website for those who are concerned that they may be affected to get more information. Flyers can visit delta.com/response to learn more about the leak. The airline is promising a dedicated phone line for those affected by the leak, as well as reaching out to those by mail who are confirmed to have compromised data.
