The “I Was Here” Game Debate: Should FlyerTalk Members Leave Their Mark?

January 24, 2013 by Brian Cohen

Back in June of 2004, FlyerTalk member RobotDoctor proposed an idea: FlyerTalk members who are flying as passengers on United Airlines sign their FlyerTalk names on the United Voices page of the current issue of Hemispheres, which is the official monthly in-flight magazine of United Airlines. This idea became a popular tradition which...

Flying Blue Offers Elite Status Match to Gold — But…

January 23, 2013 by Brian Cohen

In what seems to be a rather bizarre offer valid through May 30, 2013, Flying Blue — a joint frequent flier loyalty program of Air France and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines — is offering a status match to gold elite members of “any alliance programme” to Flying Blue Gold, which offers the following benefits, including...

January 22, 2013 by Brian Cohen

Should There Be an Award Category for Worst Program?

January 24, 2013 by Brian Cohen

As you may already know, voting for the 2013 FlyerTalk Awards — sponsored by KAYAK — is currently under way through February 15, 2013. However, FlyerTalk member Carolinian wonders why there is not a category for the worst frequent travel loyalty program, thinking that “we should offer the airlines both the carrot and the stick in seeking to encourage them to improve, not disembowel programs. We are burying our heads in the sand if we think everything these days is positive with ff changes.” Perhaps Carolinian has a point. There have been a spate of changes in frequent travel loyalty programs as of late which have generally been perceived as negative by FlyerTalk members, including but by no means limited to the following — all of which happened this month alone...

January 23, 2013 by Brian Cohen

You now have another option to be amongst the first passengers to board the aircraft on a Southwest Airlines flight: pay $40.00 to score one of the earliest boarding positions at the gate at the airport. This new boarding option will only be offered at the gate on the day of travel, beginning 45 minutes prior to the departure of the aircraft — and it is only good on revenue tickets and not award tickets or companion passenger tickets. Many FlyerTalk members express their anger and disappointment, calling this new option...

January 22, 2013 by Brian Cohen

Winds gusting up to 60 miles per hour were apparently strong enough to blow the nose of a Boeing 737 aircraft operated by United Airlines — parked at a gate with no passengers or crew members on board — into a fuel tanker truck 70 feet away at...
