Stats

We just finished a short stay at the Allison in the heart of Oregon's Pinot Noir country and I thought I would share my impressions. We took a quick two day trip up from our home in San Francisco to meet some friends from Portland and purchase some nice Oregon pinots for the holidays. We love California pinots but thought it would be fun to do some Oregons for a change which we like as well.

Room

Upon arriving at the Allison we were warmly greeted by the friendly young men working at valet parking ( free of charge btw). By the time we walked up to the front desk to check in the staff all knew our names and were ready to take us to our room. They showed us to our Grand Deluxe King on what they call the Penthouse floor ( the fourth floor which is the top), and it was quite nice. Sort of like a jr. Suite and about 550-600 sq ft. We had a nice view of the gardens and vineyards with a small balcony containing a table and 2 chairs. Oregon can be quite cloudy and rainy, but it was a beautiful sunny day with clear blue skies despite being quite cold. The room contained a large comfortable king size bed, a sitting area, a gas fireplace, and a separate dining cove with a table and four chairs. There was a good sized modern bathroom with separate tub, walk in shower, and double sinks. The hotel had placed a welcome bottle of local Sparking wine on ice on our table, along with a welcome note from the manager. All the rooms come with a basket of snacks which are also offered free of charge. The room really did have everything you would ask for in a luxury hotel, but somehow we could not help thinking something was missing although we were quite pleased!

Service

Off we went to go wine tasting. As we were leaving the front desk asked us if we would like to borrow one of their Lexus hybrids instead of using our rental car. We said why not and they delivered a lovely Lexus luxury 450 hybrid for our use that afternoon. Evidently they make this available to guests staying in certain room types for a half day during their stay. We had a nice lunch and did our wine shopping enjoying this interesting very high tech car!

Dining

Upon returning we freshened up for dinner in their restaurant called Jory. The lounge had some nice jazz music playing, but we decided to just proceed to dinner for our 8:00 reservation. The dining room ambiance was nice - casual, but a notch upscale with an open kitchen, some tables on the window, and raised booths in the back. Given the fact it is dark early this time if year I think the booths are where you want to to be. In summer months I would opt for a window or outdoors if warm to enjoy the views. We had a nice dinner with terrific wine. The food however I can only give a "B". Too bad as a destination resort like this in the wine country should have a great restaurant. It was crowded and despite having a room in the hotel we had a tough time getting a reservation at a good time so maybe they think a "B" is good enough! Anyway we liked it, just did not love it and if had been staying for more than one night would have wanted to venture onto town to eat dinner.

Spa

We did not use the spa, but they had a nice menu of treatments, and the indoor pool looked very nice. If we had stayed longer would have indulged as it looked quite nice!

Overall

Overall I would definitely stay here again if in this part of the country. It is not Auberge du Soleil in the Napa Valley, but certainly a great option and the only real option in Oregon Pinot land!

What was that something that we felt was missing? Hard to say. Maybe just a bit sterile like it was designed for corporate functions. Did not feel character. Hard to out my finger on it but we would return, and found the service very friendly and good, and the room very comfortable. Not sure i would consider it a destination in and of itself, but if you love good wine, and want to visit this area, I highly recommend!
