Short Review

I just completed a stay at Shangri-La Tokyo. Overall, I thought it was a nice hotel. I found the hotel to be very pretty -- that form is very important at this hotel, and sometimes, at the expense of function. Quality is evident throughout.

The rooms: We were in a Deluxe room facing towards Disneyland and the layout of the room was very good. The room felt spacious and was intelligently designed. There were enough power sockets in the room to charge our multitude of iOS devices.

The size of the Deluxe room at the SL is slightly smaller than the Grand room at the MO; however, the MO Grand room felt smaller due to, personally, less effective use of space.

The bathroom is nice with the bath and shower in one enclosed wet room. At the MO, the wet room is open to the bathroom letting in a lot of cooler air.

The decor or the room, however, at the SL is Asian but this hotel really could be in any Asian city. There is not much that has a true sense of place -- Tokyo. The MO did a much better job on this front.

We had access to Horizon Club and it is a compact lounge on the 37th floor. The breakfast selection is quite extensive with many a la carte options (which mirror availability in Piacere downstairs). Food quality is good and service is decent. Too bad you cannot take F&B from the lounge back to your room for consumption.

Some other observations:

The cups in the rooms are crystal and the glassware used in the restaurants are of very high quality. The presentation of food is very pretty where careful attention has been placed on the presentation of the food. However, not all of the food tastes as good as it looks and there is not the obsessiveness on quality a la MO when it comes to food at breakfast.

Given this, I think I prefer the MO over the Shangri-La.
