G Deluxe

I made a stop at Pullman Bangkok Hotel G as part of a mattress run to compare with other hotels we tried before.  It should come as no surprise if I stated that Banyan Tree, Sofitel Sukhumvit, and Sofitel SO are clearly the top three Accor properties in Bangkok based on my experience, but in the segment below in some ways I liked Pullman G better than the two MGallery hotels (Muse and VIE).

Immediately upon entering the hotel we could see the design-oriented nature of the hotel: perhaps I am not familiar enough with the Pullman brand but it seemed a bit similar to MGallery.

Megatix

I booked a G Deluxe room which I believe is the entry level room, using a voucher sold on a third party website (Megatix).  Whether loyalty program benefits are applicable or not with these vouchers depends entirely on which hotel (it’s not even uniform within the same hotel chain), some include benefits and some do not.  The voucher for Pullman G did not have loyalty program exclusions listed in the terms & conditions so I assumed that I would get my Diamond benefits but unfortunately when I tried to redeem the voucher directly with the hotel they informed me that I would not get benefits.  I pointed out to the lack of exclusions and subsequently they responded that they would allow me to use the lounge.  Given that my elite status is already renewed for 2022 I did not mind much that I would not earn points for the stay and I did not push the issue further.

Room

Because of the above I did not expect an upgrade, but upon check-in I was told they upgraded me because of my Diamond status.  I am not exactly sure what room type I received however because based on the pictures on the hotel website and the floor I was on, it seems I had the entry level room type, yet the room felt spacious and according to the floor plan, my room was indeed larger than others assuming it was up to scale.

I am a traveler who highly values suite upgrades and I did not get a suite at Pullman G, but despite this fact I think I preferred our room at Pullman G over our suite at VIE and Muse, which is quite telling.  Both VIE and Muse were quite dark and our room at Pullman G was the complete opposite: completely white plus floor to ceiling windows so it could not have possibly been more different.  Also our suite at Muse was on two floors which can be conceptually appealing but practically speaking it was not as useful as having a big room on one floor only.  The suite at VIE was aging while Pullman looked more contemporary which matches my personal taste better.  I also liked the complete lack of carpet in the room which was aligned with the room design to give a feeling and white & clean.  A luxury feature of the hotel is that they had an extensive pillow menu, possibly as a reminder that it used to be a Sofitel.  One weakness of our room is that they perhaps got overly enthusiastic about how bright the room was that they did not include any lights on the ceiling of the bedroom so in the evening all we had were the night tables which was not ideal.  The bathroom amenities were also nothing to write home about, some un-branded black bottles significantly inferior to the Aromatherapy products at Muse.  The walls were not thick and soundproofing not very good; it was not a big issue with low occupancy but in different circumstances it could be a problem.  Finally I would note that the air conditioning was working but it was not strong enough, the room was not as cool as we would like during the night despite moving the temperature controls down to the minimum.

Bottom line no suite upgrade and I am not sure what room type I had so it’s hard to draw conclusions about the usual Diamond treatment in normal times.

Dining

Because of low occupancy the breakfast was only provided in the Club Lounge rather than in the restaurant which means all guests could go to the lounge in the morning.  Thankfully the hotel was almost empty so we had the place almost entirely to ourselves.  The breakfast was far superior to Muse and VIE: an a la carte breakfast is usually more luxurious than a buffet (like at VIE) and the menu was far more extensive than at Muse.

Even though they told me that I would not get Accor Diamond benefits, when I checked in they nonetheless gave me the welcome drinks vouchers.  The bar of the hotel was quite impressive, visually attractive and was surprisingly lively even during week days.

Wifi

Wifi worked well with speeds of 25-30 Mbps.

Overall

Overall Pullman G is a decent hotel in its price range compared to other Accor options.  That said, it is clearly a notch below the top 3 Accor properties BT, Sofitel, and SO.  Because the level of hotels is different I hesitate to make such comparisons but in a city like Bangkok the dollar or euro difference is not as much as in Europe or North America so a bit extra can go far which is why personally I would lean on the top 3 more than others.  In Pullman’s price range there is strong competition with other hotel chains who upgrade more liberally to suites although that remains to be proven given the unusual circumstances of my stay at Pullman G.
