Great hotel in downtown Chicago - great service and hard product. Located on Magnificient Mile between Chicago River and Oak St luxury shopping.

Check In

When guests enter the hotel, they must take an elevator up to the lobby level to check in. The dependable display of luxury jewelry is on display in the hall way that leads to the concierge, check in desk, and grand lobby.

The hotel advertises that guests' temperature will be taken at the front door, but this was not done.

Room

The rooms have a neutral palette, accented by black or ebony wood trim or furniture. We stayed in the Grand Premier room, which has a two-person couch, two chairs, and one ottoman in the bedroom. The foyer houses the mini bar and leads to the closet and bathroom.

The bathroom has a soaking tub, separate standing shower, and a separate room for the toilet. Unfortunately our room only had a single vanity. There is a TV over the tub.

Everything in the room can be controlled from tablets, of which there are three - two on each side of the bed, and one on the writing desk. The tablets are starting to show some signs of age.

Guests are given hand wipes, sanitizers, and masks.511ADF16-4A61-4D68-A649-74FA527D5F95_1_105_c.jpeg49BC90A3-2ADF-498D-8939-1CD22B60542B_1_105_c.jpeg5A77C17C-46CD-4DA6-8237-C8557E4355EB_1_105_c.jpeg38077741-7D73-4413-9594-8073A1B20D8D_1_105_c.jpeg

Service

We expected to receive consistent service as seen in Peninsula in Asia and we received that. Everyone we interacted with was pleasant. Items requested were delivered quickly.

You can message the hotel from your phone via SMS/Whatsapp to request housekeeping, waters, food, etc. This is very convenient when you are out and about with company and do not want to be on your phone calling your hotel with requests.

Gym

Because of covid, the gym and the pool were reservation only. But during our four day long weekend there, the gym was never crowded. The reservation agents will inform the guest of how many people have booked at a particular time and asked if guests would still be comfortable going to the gym then.

The gym has a nice view of Lake Michigan. Many treadmills and three Peloton bikes. Towel and iced water service available. So are headphones.

The pool has three lanes and has designated family hours where kids can come play. The jacuzzi is closed because of covid. Food and beverage service is gone besides complimentary water. Service in the locker rooms are spotty. 9B24727E-0EE5-41C4-83E9-C6EAD1DDEB41_1_105_c.jpeg

Dining

Breakfast, as with all food, is done via room service only give Chicago's covid restrictions. The food was delicious and appropriately portioned. My only complaint was that the mandatory $6 delivery charge the hotel imposes when guests have no option to dine in the lobby. A 16% gratuity is added to the bill as well.

We enjoyed the dim sum and noodles in the Chinese breakfast, reminiscent of what we would get in Hong Kong. We enjoyed the Pen-edict as well - eggs benedict with lobster, caviar, shaved truffles and a truffle hollandaise. A heavenly dish!

The only hiccup in dining service was with the lady who took our breakfast orders - on two of the three times we ordered food from her, there were erroneous charges for items included in the set breakfast, or charges for item substitutions that she said is complimentary. However, these were quickly addressed when we were going over the bill at check out.

Overall

Overall a pleasant experience at the Peninsula Chicago. The occupancy rates were low, staff is courteous and pleasant, and handling of curve balls thrown by covid is well-done. Would definitely recommend when returning to Chicago.
