We always do One Night in Bangkok in and out of Asia and we had planned to stay both nights at the PH BKK but were underwhelmed with the stay so I changed out final night to the StR, despite having confirmed a suite at the PH in advance with a TSU.
I booked a Metropolitan Suite on a prepaid rate, which I only ever do if the stay is within a few days via the SPG call centre.
We booked the hotel limo because of BKK traffic and our separate Meet & Assist booked through BFS called the hotel driver to coordinate with him.
Check In
As always, we were offered private in room check in. Our Butlet met us at the car and whisked us up to our room. The SPG app hadn't updated with any upgrade so I was surprised to find her escorting us to a suite on the 23rd floor.
Room
I honestly can't tell which suite type it is, when I asked she simply said "Specialty Suite." It has a large living area, bedroom, 1.5 bathrooms, dining table and kitchenette with views of the racecourse.
As we had said when we were at the PH the grandeur, elegance and luxury of the StR is hard to surpass. It just feels grand.
The bathrom was large with full size Elemis amenities and two sinks.
Service
Service is impeccable. We had spa treatments booked in advance and reservations at the bar for dinner. All was handled and reconfirmed.
Our plane arrived late and the driver called ahead and rescheduled the first spa treatment to the next day without asking.
Dining
We had dinner at the bar and was pleasantly surprised to find it was Happy Hour (6-8PM). The StR Rossini Burger is to die for and the cocktails are fantastic.
The Butler delivered our chosen coffees within 3 mins of asking.
Breakfast is always busy but of a high standard. Options are fresh made to order eggs, Pancakes, Waffles and there is a great a la carte menu with even more options.
Overall
Overall, we had another impeccable stay. I thought the PH would be competition but it's absolutely no match.
The fact that a 5 star hotel has street noise on the 20th floor in a city like Bangkok shows that they skimped on construction. PH service is good and while it is new it should be better.
The StR has always been a solid hotel that exceeds expectations and this stay was no exception. This is precisely what a luxury hotel should be like and the PH will have to significantly up its game to compete.
The PH may be minimilist and in some ways the nod to tradition exists but it just doesn't feel as luxe.
We always end our Asian vacations here and spend the entire day and night in the hotel because it so peaceful and calm. We will continue to do so.
