Suppose I could just copy paste m0hamed's review (https://www.flyertalk.com/hotel-reviews/r-a-grand-stay-in-a-grand-hotel-4664) but I'll add my own touch.

As part out our mad summer holiday European city tour with a toddler we booked 4 nights on 'Upgrade Premium Suite' rate for a Grand Executive Suite at the Grand Hyatt Berlin.

Prioer to my stay I contacted the GM Jan regarding a number of requests and Julia the room and experieance manager handled everything excellently.  Room setup for my daughter and ammentiites was great, helped with arranging some books for here as well as some chocolates and milk.  Great alcohol ammenities for myself and my partner.

Check In

Arranged transfer via the hotel.  Swen the concirenge handled this and kept in touch during arrival as we were slow getting through passport control, sunlit uplands and all that.

Arrived at the hotel and was welcomed by Patrick on the front desk who advised everything was ready in the room as requested, he explained the Grand Club and breakfast situation and we were provided a pushchair for our daughter.

Luggage came prompty up a few minutes after we got to the room and we were good to go.

Room

We were given room 420, named Victor de Kowa suite.

The room is large with a fully seperated bedroom with walk in wardrobe and bathroom, which is easily the standout element of the room.  The shauna shower worked excellently.  There is a guest toilet, desk working area, dining table for chairs for four people and a living space with a sofa and two arm chairs.

WIth the walk in wardrobe and cupboard space around the living area you won't run out of places to store things.

Bedroom & walk in wardrobe

Our daughter had a very good cot bed, slippers, bathrobe and towels, all nicely setup and orgranised.  The books and chocolate I requested were already in the room and the milk in the fridge.

Views

Out of the living area you get a nice view out to the front of the threatre.  From the bathroom and bedroom it's not that interesting.

The only issues I had with the room are the dark wood - when it wasn't so bright outside it did brings things down quite a bit.

And this thing.

20230804_232841.jpg

No information was given about what these panels do.  There were large ones in the bedroom and living room and some smaller ones dotted around.  It seemed to me that the top button turns everything on, the bottom turns everything off.  The 2nd button turns on a secondary light and the 3rd button dims / turns off the primary lighting.  But the smaller panels could control tertiary lighting that main panels couldn't control as well as turning off the main lighting and then main panels had no control over the tertiary lighting.   Absoultely no idea what the green lights representated either.

The air-con was alright, quiet but I can see why people would comment on it struggling.  While we were in Berlin temps didn't go above 25 and a couple of days were gloomy and rainy but I can imagine if it was hitting 32C+ there might be a struggle with it.  Obivously the good news is that the windows can be fully opened in all rooms of the suite

Service

As mentioned pre-arrival stuff was excellent, Julia was very responsive and personable there were no issues there.  Room service orders were handled fine, house keeping was great no problems with timings or anything, toiletries were always refreshed and my daughters stuff was always neatly arranged.

The only gripes I have aroundservice come from the following.  Breakfast service when it came to communication.  Okay my GCSE Germany might be a little rusty but ordering a 'English breakfast' tea, a hot chocolate and a cold glass of milk isn't too complex and shouldn't end up resulting in an earl grey and a chocolate milk.

Also there lack of proactivness around our daughter was quite poor.  Now we were not the only people staying with children or a young toddler aged child and we did witness other people struggling with staff when it came to fulfilling things like smaller drinks or plates.  3 out of the 4 breakfast mornings the front of house was handled by the same person who on each occasion gave us 3 sets of full sized cutlery.  Only on one occasion did a member of staff offer to get us a smaller set for our daughter, the other times we had to ask.

And something else which I didn't bring up with my partner at the time when I noticed it, she actually mentioned it after we had left Berlin, was on 2 occasions when leaving the property out of the main door, rather than the restaurant door, we were completely blanked by the same concierge.  On one occasion he just looked right through us and the other he seen us and then started talking to someone at the front desk.  No nod, guten morgen or anything.  A bit strange as there was no way he didn't not notice us.

Dining

Breakfast options were excellent, a lot of cold meats and cheeses as you might expect.  The al la carte (didn't take a photo of the menu sorry) options were good and always came promptly.

One good point was during breakfast the service to order drinks and food was managed very well by the staff.

We had room service a couple of times and while the vegetarian options were lacking the food was good and we had no issues with the service.

Now let's talk about the Grand Club lounge.  A good sized main seating area with a smaller seating area behind the TV wall.

We only went to 'tea time' (cake time) as it's called a couple of times.  The cakes were nice but allergen / diatry information wasn't provided so we had to ask each time about what was vegetarian or not.  We had evening snacks once and it was okay, 5 options if I remember rightly - a soup, some cold curry salad, pizza, something else.  But I might not be remembering rightly as it wasn't memorable and most definitely not Grand.  Nothing to make us think "oh we should definitely come by as a break" or "make time to go by before going out".

Now I'm new to Hyatt so this next point might not be needed to be seen as a negative and just down to my expectation but during the self service time e.g. outside of the scheduled 'event times' there was no alcohol and no snacks available in the lounge.  It was just soft drinks and the coffee machine.

I thought that was very odd.  Or should I not be expecting that from a Grand Hyatt 'Grand Club' lounge?

Location

It's ideal isn't it really whether you're there for work or on a family trip.  Berlin's public transport is excellent and being right next to Potsdamer Platz so you've 5 bus routes, 4 S-bahns and 1 U-bahn a few minutes walk so you can get anywhere and everywhere you want to within the city.

Plenty of shops around with the shopping centre too if you need any bits and pieces.

Random musing

Just a random thought which others may have picked up during their stays.

What is with the house smell?  When we first got out of the the lift into the corrider it really hit me - very musky deep scented smell, it was really quite off putting and took until probably the last day of our stay to get used to it.

I don't know whether the temperature and possible lack of air-con through the corriders had anything to do with it, but it really wasn't pleasent at all.

Overall

We really enjoyed our stay.  The odd service issues while yes they could be improved on they were not at such a negative level to detract from how positively we felt about our stay.  The 'Grandness' could be improved upon to back up all the talk.

Next time we're in Berlin we'll definitely look to stay here again.
