Five years to Chinchero airport

The Transports Minister just announced the new Cusco airport at Chinchero (US$400 millions) will be ready in 4 to 5 years. The current Cusco airport will be closed once the new one starts operations.

He realizes the Velasco Astete airport is "about to collapse" (saturation) so it will be improved to support aditional flights. This includes airstrip lights for night flights.

The new airport will receive direct international flights, not needing to stop in Lima (that could create an impact in Lima tourism, that's why they are creating the Lima brand and other ideas).

It was $350 million, then jumped to $380 million in 1210, now 2 years later $400 million... and still 5 years away. They have been collecting the 5 buck airport fee on 1.5 million pax for years... maybe they should use some to just install the lights at Alejandro Velasco Astete... might be faster.

thanks for the update! funny thing is, our tour guide in Cuzco told us the new airport was already under construction and would be ready this year or next. guess he was off by 4-5 years! haha.
