‘Useless’ Airport Gets Its First Passenger Plane Landing

After being announced that it would be built more than a decade ago, Saint Helena Airport (HLE) finally received its first commercial flight – carrying 60 people – last week. Located on a tiny island that is part of the British Overseas Territory, HLE “cost the equivalent of nearly £63,000 for each of territory’s 4,534 residents,” according to The Telegraph.  Because of dangerous winds, large aircraft cannot operate at HLE.
