Jet Engine Blast Kills New Zealand Woman

A 57-year-old New Zealand woman died of serious injuries after the force of a jet engine near Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) threw her body backward. Tourists on the beach next to the airport are warned via sign not to approach the fence due to the force of the jet engines, and police report that the victim had been gripping the fence at the time of the incident.

“Many tourists come to the island to experience the thrills of the landing of approaching aircraft flying low above their heads and the holding on to the airport fence and standing in the jet blast of large aircraft taking off. Doing this is, however, extremely dangerous,” said a police spokesperson.
