Eight-Foot Anaconda Skin Seized at Airport

A New Zealander was stopped by security staff at Auckland Airport for carrying an eight-and-a-half-foot snakeskin in his luggage. The snakeskin, thought to be from an endangered Brazilian anaconda, was declared a biosecurity risk to native New Zealand wildlife and agriculture. The contraband item might have pests or diseases, according to a Ministry for Primary Industries spokesperson.

Because the passenger declared the enormous snakeskin, he had not committed an infringement, but the contraband item was confiscated. Because it is believed to have come from an endangered animal, selling or buying the item is illegal, and the snakeskin in question is now being held by Auckland authorities.
