Airbus Expects Hybrid Passenger Planes by 2030

Airbus has formed a partnership with German industrial conglomerate Siemens (SIEGY) in order to develop hybrid aircraft able to carry up to 100 passengers by using a combination of electric power and fossil fuel – the aircraft equivalent of a Prius. The hybrid Airbus planes are projected to consume 25% less fossil fuel than a conventional Airbus, and be almost silent during take-off and landing when running solely on electric power, according to a spokesperson for Siemens. According to Airbus CEO Tom Enders, the ultimate goal of the partnership is “zero-emissions aviation,” and the two companies have allocated 200 total employees for developing the hybrid aircraft.
