$79 Room Rate Cancelled to Resell for More Than Double

The Four Points by Sheraton New Orleans Airport.

When a hotel room is reserved in advance, can it be cancelled at any time by the hotel property prior to the guest checking in?

FlyerTalk member andymo99 does not think so, as he says that a “NoLa hotel cxld my reservations b/c they realized they can sell the rms for more!

Several rooms were reserved six months ago at an advance rate of $79.00 per night at the Four Points by Sheraton New Orleans Airport to use for the Final Four basketball event in 2012. The hotel property contacted him by postal mail indicating that the room rate will be honored but that an advance payment is due by September 30 — a date that andymo99 considers to be unreasonably short notice, as the letter was postmarked on September 23 and he was in the middle of traveling at that time.

As the request had not been fulfilled by the allotted date, the hotel property has cancelled six of seven of his requests so that they may supposedly charge a room rate of $175.00 per night instead, which is more than double the $79.00 room rate originally secured by andymo99.

All of the room rates quoted here do not include taxes and fees.

Does andymo99 have a legitimate complaint? If so, how should andymo99 go about dealing with this issue?
