New United Airlines Mileage Plus Program Details Announced

There are many changes to the United Airlines Mileage Plus frequent flier loyalty program announced in the Merger Update: 2012 MileagePlus Program Details — and FlyerTalk members generally believe that the news is not as bad as expected or rumored.

Among the many program details are:

  • There are now four status tiers, not including Global Services, which is by invitation only
  • Four paid flights on United Airlines, Continental Airlines and Copa Airlines are required to qualify for any of the status tiers
  • New nomenclature, including replacing the term Elite with Premier
  • Reduced bonus award miles for Gold and Platinum members
  • Fare class bonus award miles
  • Instant upgrades for passengers paying certain full-fare Economy Class cabin airfares
  • With the exception of receiving certain upgrades, spouses enjoy the same benefits and Premier status as the Mileage Plus member
  • Silver Premier Mileage Plus members incur certain reductions in benefits, such as a reduced baggage allowance and Economy Plus access at check-in
  • Certain Premier Mileage Plus members will receive complimentary membership in the Global Entry program
