My first hotel review ever! Here goes!

1_DSC_1767 (1).jpg

Located near Bras Basah and Bugis MRT, the Mercure Bugis is a new hotel (opened in 2016) that is located in the Bugis area in Singapore. I decided to do a short staycation at the Mercure Bugis over the weekend to just chill and relax with the wifey. I also wanted to experience the new loft room and check out the service.

Check In

I reached around 2.30pm and was promptly served. The lobby is nicely setup with a nice high ceiling with plenty of natural lighting and generous seating. There was also a Mac for guests to serve the Internet. The bar was also located there with open seating.

As I was an Accor Gold member, I was upgraded to the Executive Loft Room (Booked a standard loft room). I was also granted late check-out till 4pm on the day of checkout. Welcome drink coupons for 2 was duly accorded. There was some renovation going on the second floor and I was told it was for a new Chinese restaurant. The noise did not bother us during our whole stay at all. Side note, I managed to figure out the WiFi login and password as it was not shared. Internet is fast, but limited to 2 devices per room.

Room

There are 3 categories of rooms sold online - Standard, Loft Standard and Loft Executive. The difference between the Loft Standard and the Executive is the latter boasts a slightly larger space and also the inclusion of a Nespresso machine. The Loft Executive rooms also grant you access to the Executive lounge located on the third floor.

I have heard about the open toilet with the standard lofts and was mentally prepared to see it. To my surprise, this  room had a nice cosy corner enclosed toilet that overlooks the St Joseph Church and National Design Centre.

The wall was fabric and was in a very nice shade of red. I really liked the natural lighting that made the small room look spacious. There are two TVs (I think 40 inches) in the room - one on the ground floor, the other one upstairs. There is a Handy phone in the room (remember to reformat it after you leave) on the desk. The sofa can be turned into a sofa bed. There was no welcome amenity.

Coming back to the washroom, the usual Mercure bathroom items are supplied. The toilet is small but sufficiently equipped with a rain shower. The water tends to splash all over but it was manageable.

Service

The bright spot of service belonged to.....the Housekeeping Department and Concierge. Housekeeper Auntie Doris was chirpy and nice throughout the stay. As we were headed out to cycle with our bikes, she even insisted that we took extra bottles of water as the weather was warm. They also took super fast to get us extra towels as the room only had 1 bath towel on the first night.

Front Desk and F&B was cold and did their job as usual. I felt they could have done more than to just hang around and talk amongst themselves - pedestrian service...

Dining

Breakfast was served at Sauces by Chef Daniel. The usual were on offer - bread basket (their cranberry bread is good), salad, fruits, 8 selections of warm dishes to choose from, Noodle station and Egg Station.

We had lunch on the day of checkout and they had some good promotion for their set lunches - Salad Bar + Main Course + Coffee and Tea for just $22.80++. There was a 50% off for Accor Plus members too!

Pool

The pull factor for this hotel is the infinity pool and jacuzzi. Here's a day and night shot of the pool area. It's just really weird to be facing public housing though - not a big deal actually. The gym is small with just a few machines - so I decided to head out for a run instead.

Location

The Bugis area boasts the local flavour and really is unbeatable for those wanting to explore Singapore - For example, the coffeshop opposite the hotel serves great char siew rice and soup. For those who love curry rice (scissors rice), there is also a nice stall in the coffeeshop itself. For thai Food at Sunshine Plaza is also really good. The usual run of the mill shopping centres like Bugis Plus and Bugis Junction also hosts many restaurants. There is also a cineplex at Bugis Plus.

Perhaps unique to Singapore, you get a taste of racial and religious harmony in this area - Christian churches, Catholic churches, Taoist temples, a Hindu temple, even a Jewish synagouge all within 2km of each other.

Overall

For $140 a night with breakfast, bundled with a nice location and lovely amenities, I couldn't really ask for more (maybe except for better and proactive service). Will I be back - certainly, but hoping that loyal members can be treated just that bit better.
